A Russian River tradition for nearly a century, Johnson’s Beach is a favorite summer spot for Sonoma County locals and visitors alike. Sunning, swimming and floating at our Guerneville beach is as much a Sonoma County pastime as wine tasting and strolling through the redwoods.  Located ninety minutes north of the Bay Area in the charming and eclectic town of Guerneville, this classic summer getaway sits in the heart of the Russian River Valley and provides the quintessential summertime river experience.  Kayaks, canoes and inner tubes are available to rent.

Pets are not permitted with the exception of service dogs.

However, most people picnic, swim, sunbath, etc. and are usually out close to 4 or 5 hours. You will see wildlife such as: otter, Great Blue Heron, osprey, turtles, egret, and more. Canoeing at Burke’s is a true Russian River Tradition. We open for the 2018 summer season beginning
Saturday May 25nd (24th for camping), and is open seven days a week thereafter for canoe trips, kayak trips, and camping, through mid October.

MONTE RIO BEACH
(707) 865-9956
https://www.mrrpd.org/monteriobeach.html
Monte Rio Beach is the largest public beach on the lower Russian River and is ADA accessible. East of the Monte Rio Bridge and known locally as Big Rocky Beach, this is the location of the Independence weekend children’s games organized under the banner of Big Rocky Games. A lighted boat flotilla and fireworks follow for an old-fashioned family experience.  Enjoy the serenity of this part of the Russian River and rent a canoe, paddle board or kayak (see below for rates). This is a great place to learn water sports but it’s also challenging enough to attract the advanced paddler.  Our food concession stand is stocked with cold drinks, ice cream and lunchable items. Volleyball courts and horseshoe pits are free to any who wish to play. The parking lot is only open during the regular season and closes at 8pm. Built-in barbecue areas overlook the beauty and grandeur of the redwood covered hills across the river.  Monte Rio Beach, is open to the public Memorial weekend through the last weekend in September each year.

This tour is a great way to take a break from wine tasting and experience other side of Sonoma County! Beat the heat and paddle along to the mouth of the Russian River with its resident harbor seals, pelicans, seagulls and cormorants to entertain us. It’s a gentle, easy paddle with great views of the coast and the perched village of Jenner. We start by paddling out to the mouth of the river for a walk along the beach. We then paddle upriver around Penny Island, a local landmark, before heading back to the launch. A nice gourmet picnic at the end of the trip rounds out your day of Russian River kayaking.
